For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son. John 3:16

If you have a calm, tranquil disposition or you are
particularly sensitive to noise, then Thursday evenings
are probably not a good time to be around the Church or
the Church halls. From 5.15 to 7.00 pm, the walls resound
to the noise of shrieks, screams, occasional singing and lots
of laughter as Scope, our weekly kids’ club for Primary 2-7
children meets each week in term time between September
until the Easter holidays. The programme changes from week to week, but invariably combines a mixture of arts and crafts, sports and games, fun with food and the odd scientific experiment thrown in for good measure – and a bang! Each week there is a simple Christian message, based either on a Bible story, or starting with a short film clip to introduce a theme relevant to children’s feelings and experiences. This year the regular snack of juice and sweets has given way to a more exotic menu ranging from ‘milk and jammie dodgers’ through fresh fruit and fresh juice (healthy living evening!) and even hot chocolate and fruit kebabs with a chocolate fountain (very unhealthy living!).
Admission costs £1.50 per child per week, to cover expenses. We make no profit but use all of our income either to resource the weekly programme or for special events like our recent Christmas party for the P2-4s, whilst the P5-7s went to the cinema to see ‘Flushed Away’ for their Christmas treat.
A regular team of around 14 leaders (all of whom are cleared to work with children under the terms of Disclosure Scotland) give up their time each week to make sure that Scope is a safe and enjoyable event, assisted by a rota of parent volunteers. Currently some 50 children are registered, with an average weekly attendance of between 40 and 50 children. They keep coming back, so we must be doing something right!
